I have a 2001 Standard. I have heard that the K & N air filter is better than the stock Honda filter. Is this true? Does the K & N increase gas mileage? Does it increase performance? I have 5,200 miles on the bike and have not had the filter serviced.

I like my K&N, but NOT because of any performance gains. I did not notice ANY more power (nor less), same with fuel mileage. I bought mine for the longevity (1million mile guarantee) and the savings over the OEM filters. It is a bit of hassle to change the filter so I did not want to have to do it very often. I changed mine once at 22K then changed to the K&N at 47K. I will not service it again until about 80K.

Since K&N said the bike runs a bit lean without it. I live at 3200 feet and regularly ride in the mountains.

The K&N is a great filter. The valk is so sensitive as far as the filter goes the K&N is the best choice. The stock filter starts really having a noticeable effect around 15k. Even though the filter looks halfway decent the plenum is such a poor design that it really has a effect on performance. The K&N flows great past 30K and beyond. BR

BR,
Is the K&N just a straight replacement for the stock one, i.e., no rejetting, etc?
Thanks,

It will run a little leaner with the K&N but not enough to justify rejeting. You may notice a performance gain from about 4500-6500 rpms. Differant from bike to bike but never had to rejet a bike because of the K&N. BR

Thanks BR...
My stock filter has only 4200 miles on it, so I will probably run it a bit longer before swapping out...

Hey Wendell: an air filter is just an air filter forget about gas milage if you want it ,leave your bike alone it as it is, max gas milage...If you want preformace use a stage one air cleaner and a stage one power kit and a glass pack modification .( you can find it on the web in our site ) look I am just comenting from experience, put your money were your mouth is.......... go for it, it is all reverseable if you want... its just parts you screw in and take out if you want....But wendall let me tell you my 99 interstate has never run better than with the stage one power kit and the glass pack mod my acceleration from 70-90 has never been better .... to drive this thing is pissssssssser.....this thing is awsome my milage at 90 mph is 20-25 but f------------------ it if this pig runs the way I want I don"t care if gas is 3.00 per it is what I want ( just my opinion...........) towman 85 out for now....

Those of you installing the K&N replacement air filter for the OEM Honda item-K & N supplies a couple of stickers for you to attach to bike to forewarn whomever performs the next air filter maintenance that a "permanent" filter is installed and does not need to be disposed of but rather can be cleaned and re-used. Equally important on the Valkyrie is whether this type of filter is there at all as opposed to OEM filter. If a K&N is there already, then the recommended duration between services can be extended. Guess what I found-K&N filter already there. Assuming it was installed at the recommended 12,000 beginning interval to start with, I should not have had to deal with this service till atleast 32,000 miles. I had already talked to prev. (first and only owner when I bought bike) and the selling dealer-there were no stickers present on bike to forewarn that filter had already been changed to K&N unit. I can see why the dealer might dummie up-after all, this means x-tra bucks to him. What I don't understand is prev. owner doing this to me. At any rate, do the next owner a favor and PUT THOSE STICKERS ON. Changing the air filter on a Valkyrie Interstate is no picnick.
