Alph and I were out yesterday enjoying the early fall colors on some local roads and came across this wood-decked bridge.  This is my favorite time of year for riding through the falling leaves and great colors. The fall colors should be in full force in a week or two, can't wait!

There’s a neat history behind that bridge.  it was originally set up about 15 miles down the river, to what is now lake wissota, you might remember lake wissota being mentioned in that movie "Titanic", but it was impossible, cause the lake didn't exist in 1912, it was made in 1917.  At that time the bridge was originally placed on hwy "SS" but when the Chippewa River was dammed to form the lake the bridge was moved to its current location.

About ten years ago the bridge was slated for replacement because the concrete pylons were deteriorating, the people in the area petitioned the state and they rebuilt the approaching ends of the bridge along with the center support.  Without the bridge the residents of "Cobben" would have to travel 15 miles out of the way to get to their land on the other side of the river.

Oh forgot to mention, I’m working on making a camera mount to fit on my handle bars, I’m planning on taking video of our ride along the Chippewa River next week, hopefully the colors will be at peak!!  If I didn’t have to work this coming weekend, we could get down to Mondovi and get some real nice roads, that would be a good ride to record!!

Alph, the history on the bridge is interesting.  Glad to hear locals wanted to keep it.

back to the Fall Color part of this thread.  I was out and about last Friday.  Some of the Aspen/Cottonwoods are starting to change around here. Not many Oaks or other hard woods around here.  Should be a good color ride next week,  Found several roads around here that the fall colors will be great if the present storm doesn't leave the roads littered with that White Stuff.

Just for the record there is a skiff of the "White Stuff" about 400' up the hill behind my home this morning with mid 30's temps.   I know it will burn off in an hour or so, but it's still there.   Not too early, but really don't want to see it yet.  Thankfully there are a lot of roads lower than my home to ride during the coming months.

Maybe it is me or the area, but the fall colors this October are not as colorful as years past.  We have had some high winds recently and I'm sure some of the trees colorful leaves are down already, but the maples should be peaking color now or very shortly and they are falling without changing colors.  Guessing the drier than normal summer had something to do with it?

Same here, there never really was a peak. I drove from EC to the Madison area to the Janesville area this weekend and the leaves were all gone already. Last year wasn't great either...

well, with the huricane winds we've been having this last week!!  cripes it's been windy!  we had one day last week (right after it rained all day) when the winds weren't bad, that's the one day i was able to burn all my leaves.  the one good thing is that the neighbors tree has lost most of it's leaves and they've blown past our house to the guy next door!  first time i won't have to rake up his leaves!!  Grin
