I took my new Valkyrie to East Tn and rode the Tail of the Dragon. I was a little nervous about the trip because I have only had it a week or so and was unsure of how it would handle the twisties and hills. Well, I shouldn't have worried! It was a pleasure to ride this machine up there. I met up with a group of HD riders in Townsend and joined their group. Some of them had never seen a Valk before and one asked if HD made it. They were all impressed by it and its performance. As was I!

After a few weeks of riding new to the Valk also, it was pretty easy to maneuver, at least for me.  I too was a little nervous at first after not been on any cycle since my former honda magna sold in 1997.  A few weeks ago 2 what looked like HD riders came out of my local grocery store in front of me some and came over to my bike and kept looking at my all black I/S.  I overhead them say to each other what kind of HD is that before one said, 'oh it's a honda' and kept on walking away before I got to my bike.  Around here, if it is not a HD, then it ain't worth riding.  Oh well, their loss, my gain.

I agree. I ride with a coupe of HD riders and they don't seem to care much what others ride, but there is a "brotherhood" attitude about them, like if you don't ride a HD, you can't be their brother. One of them told me he bought his HD for the brand name and so he could legitimately wear HD shirts, hats, etc. That's ok...it wasn't my money he spent. He's still a good friend and we enjoy riding together, so it works.

Hi,

I love the mentality of the people telling me to "get a hardley".
When I ask them what kind of bike do they own and ride, they don't own one.
But they do own the shirt!!

Living in S.E Wisconsin you get alot of it. But I always say I would rather ride my ride than fix my ride!!

I've owned two new Harleys.  I bought a new Softtail in 95 and a new Road Glide in 2005.  I really wanted to give Harley a chance.  I sold both bikes within 2 years because while they worked just fine they never made me smile.  I kept my Honda V-65 Magna for 13 years and never failed to smile every time I walked up to it, and riding it was always a thrill.  And while I've only owned my Valkyrie for about 3 years now I can't imagine getting anything that could replace it.  I test rode the new Triumph Thunderbird 1700, and if I didn't already have my Valk I would own a Thunderbird.

If I still had my 1984 Honda Magna, it still would fetch the same price, if not more now, than when I sold it in 1997.  Sure wish I would have kept it, probably still be running just fine today although with some fading of paint and chrome starting to rust a little.  My prediction is the Valkyrie in 8-10 years from now will be worth as much or almost as much anyways then as it is worth now, but could be wrong with the way the economy is?  I too never had one bit of trouble with my Honda Magna except the clutch went out once and 1 dead battery while on the road in 8 years of owning it.

I bet though that Triumph would cost a pretty penny more than your current ride both in terms of price and maintenance cost down the road?

I laughed my _ss off internally when my HD neighbor, who has that HD mentality of ride HD or nothing,  told me awhile back he just spent 3500 bucks on a new belt replacement and engine mount that broke when he revved the motor.  Some people just got money to burn I guess?  Grin
