Hello all, I am a new owner of a 97 Val. This bike was under water for a few days. I am trying to turn the engine by hand. Can I do that, and how?
Thanks,
Bob E

WOW! How long has it been since the bike was under water? I assume you have drained the crankcase, pulled the plugs, drained the carb float bowls, soaked the cylinders with WD 40, etc. what to do

Coming from South Louisiana I fully understand water. As mentioned earlier, open and drain everything that can or could have held water. Spray WD-40 on all moving parts before trying to move them, especially the cylinders. I'm assuming this was fresh water. Next, spray any electrical parts and connectors with a good water dispersant/cleaner. Also make sure everything is dry before applying electric power. Your battery, unless maint. free, will also need to be replaced. You could have issues with the starter and alternator since windings and bearings were underwater. If you can undo and clean elect, connections the better. One problem with water is corrosion and that can occur months later. Going slow getting it back on the road is better and can prevent issues later.
Good luck.

Turn it over by pulling all 6 plugs, and on the front of the engine is a plate about the size of a jar lid on the belt covers. Pull that and the nut inside will turn over the engine.

Here are some answers. The bike was in the fresh water. I think a few days in the water the bike stayed. I did drain all the oil and gas. Removed the gas tank and carburetors. cleaned the bowls, floats, and needles. I still need to clean the jets. I have sprayed WD-40 in all cylinders and intakes. The starter works, but will not turn the engine. I removed the starter and jumped it with a new battery. I tried to turn the nut by the timing belts but It would not budge. One way the nut came loose the other way engine did not move. How hard can I try?

Did you pull the plugs first?

Yes. I have all plugs out. I had a 3/8 socket on it, would not budge. I am in neutral. Can I put a breaker bar on the socket wrench?

Pushing it in 5th gear sounds like a good idea. Should turn easily.....Stuck is not good!

I wouldn't force anything too much. As Valker said stuck is not good. Put lots of penetrating oil in each cylinder and let it sit a couple days. Is the bike freely moveable in neutral? Also, how long did the bike sit after the submersion? If it sat for any length of time, I would start to tear it down.

Merry Christmas to all! I finally got the engine to turn,I pushed it in 5th gear. I will continue to spray with WD and some light oil.
Thanks for all your help. I am sure I will ask some more silly questions. LOL

Good luck to you! Starter and alternator will be a problem. I could see them working, then quit down the road. I would either get some used ones to replace yours, or at least take them to a repair shop for a look-see. Keep us posted, and, as said before, THIS THREAD IS USELESS WITHOUT PICS! MP
