Some of you know that I like LED’s.  But now I think I’m getting into something that might be a bit too hard for me, although I’m going to give it a crack.  I had an LED strip that went bad, so instead of throwing it away, I decided to harvest the micro-LED’s that were on it.  Here’s how small they are.  The problem is going to be working with such a small soldering area, let alone being able to see WHAT I’m soldering!!

Here’s the LED lit with only 1 ½ volts, it requires 2.2 volts and will be extremely bright when powered correctly.  The plan is to mount this tiny thing on the tip of my cycle antennas.  The wiring will also be as much of a challenge to work with since that will be coming from an electrical coil off of a bad motor contactor I pulled apart.

Another use for such a tiny LED is as a “heads up” display on the windshield.  I have my radar detector set up so that if there is an alarm from the detector it will illuminate this tiny LED on the top of my windshield, that way I can hide my detector in a remote location.  The same thing can be done with the turn signals, we all know how annoying it is when they’re left on, flashing like crazy, driving the guy behind you nuts!!!!

WISH ME LUCK!!!

Looks like fun! I have enough problems soldering normal wires together, good luck!

Just got a lighted magnifying glass from Harbor Freight.  i've actually wanted to do this for several years now.  thankfully, i've got a lot of LED's incase i mess this one up.

i'll post pictures when i get it done, and for those that REALLY want to know, i'll do a video.

good luck with your project!

You never speed anyways so why needing a radar detector?   rolleyes

Neat idea though to have an LED light up when the fuzz is watching you.

IN bright sunshine at speed limit +20 (which I think is your usual cruising speed) and over the stereo blasting away you really think one little led will be enough warning to IMMEDIATELY slow down

What kind of radar detector are you using escort 8500 or bel? I have been thinking about those for my summer trip out west

i looked at the 8500, it's the latest and greatest, i've got the Escort X50 duel-tech radar detector, works on radar and laser, just a step down from the 8500 (older model).  were I'd mount the LED is directly on top of my windshield, and it's pretty bright.  the only problem is were do i want to mount the main unit?  i was thinking of putting it down by the little vents below the headlight, or maybe in the POD opening.  i'll make a waterproof box for it so it'll be perminant.  this damn cycle thing is a never ending journey isn't it!!

no speedee, no problems.

Hard to not speed sometimes though.  A couple years ago around midnight going home from work,  I passed a slower moving car on a steep hill at the crest/top going 75 in a 55 mph zone.  Cop came over the hill crest on top and met him right at the top.  I caught a glimpse of him while he disappeared over the hill going the other way.  He put his flashers on but was unable to turn around anytime soon since a few cars were behind me.  I kept going 75 for another 100 yards until I turned off the main road and lost him in town.  He never saw me turn off the hwy. before he got to the top of the hill to see me turn off.  Problem solved, got lucky though.

In bright sunlight you might miss that little light.  Maybe you should wire the detector to your seat through a coil so you could get an instantaneous signal regardless of day or night.  Might even be a little stronger if it's raining.

You've certainly got more patience than I.  You must be looking for something to do this winter.

Check out RAM mounts.  They make two or three different size "Aqua Boxes."    http://www.ram-mount.com/   Don't necessarily buy it from them, though.  You can get a better deal from companies that sell RAM products.
