Instead of finding ourselves packing the T-Bag for departure to Valley Forge via the Shenendoah Valley and Gettysburg, we find ourselves packing Debbie's suitcase for a trip to the hospital and major surgery on Monday, July 12th.  Earlier this year, she was in the hospital due to a viral infection that attacked her respiratory system.  During her stay, they did a CT Scan that revealed a growth in her right lung that was unrelated to the respiratory problems she was having; but something that bore watching.  After she got well, they performed a PET Scan that didn't reveal any abnormalities, so we breathed a sigh of relief.  Unfortunately, another CT Scan in June showed an increase in the size of the growth and the doctors have recommended a thoracotomy.  Despite the fact that Debbie never smoked a day in her life, the Drs. are now saying there is an 80% chance the growth is malignant.  We hope she is in the 20%; but we also take comfort in knowing that it has been detected at such an early stage, that should it be malignant, her prognosis is very good.  Whether she has chemo treatments will depend upon on how localized the cells are.

In either case, she will have a portion or entire lobe of her right lung removed and will be in ICU for 2-3 days followed by another 3-4 days in the hospital - with a 6-8 week recuperation.   Being a Hospice nurse, Deb is putting on a stoic front to others; but inside she is having the fears and anxiety that anyone in this condition would have.

So I will impose on those of you so willing, to pause for a moment and lift Debbie, her medical team and all her family in prayer for her health and recovery.  There will be other Ride-Ins for us to attend in the future and we will give out our hugs of thanks then.

Can't think of anyone more deserving of them!  Give her our love and tell her we're pulling for her.

Let us know if there's anything we can do to help.

for your words of support.  We know we have such great friends in the VOA, some of whom we have yet to meet.  As soon as I can, I will let everyone know about her surgery and prognosis.
If you are in Valley Forge, eat a helping of scrapple for us!

Praying for such great friends is an honor, not an imposition.  You know how wonderfully and inexplicably God's generous grace has pulled me through potentially fatal dilemmas on many, many occasions, and how I know and thank Him for the merciful visits to my life He has made to save me from harm.

So I am praying earnestly and with confidence that God's grace be abundantly displayed in our lives again for the benefit of Deb and all who love her, that the skills and focus of her medical team be buttressed and magnified by the Holy Spirit, that all that they and the Holy Spirit provide will have the happiest of results, and that Deb's full and complete recovery be swift, comfortable and uneventful.

You guys are greatly loved, ya know!

After having our minds (and hearts) fixed on the surgery occuring Monday the 12th; we got a call from the surgeon's office early Friday evening that she had 'failed' her pre-admission EKG in that it was showing evidence of a previous heart attack.  For that reason, the surgery was being cancelled until she could be cleared by a cardiologist.
Deb went for nuclear stress test and seems to have passed with flying colors.  Cardiologist says he finds no evidence of a previous heart attack and preliminary report is 'OK for surgery'.  We are awaiting final word, but tentatively surgery is rescheduled for Monday the 19th.
It's been a roller coaster ride; but that is life.
Sure going to miss everyone in Valley Forge.  All that are going, have a safe journey.

Dave & Deb,
I pray that the good news, after the stress test, of no evidence of a previous heart attack is a good omen for more good news after the rescheduled surgery.

My thoughts & prayers are with/for you both & that God's hand will guide the surgeons on the 19th.
