I have been considering changing the stock exhaust on my '01 Interstate and was looking for some feedback. I have noticed in the pictures that most of the bikes show blued pipes. Is this to be expected? Does anyone recommend a certain brand other than Cobra?

I had cobra pipes on my 99 tourer. They will blue on the headers. They sound great but you will loose some hp and also gas milage. I ended up putting my stock pipes back on and did the Ragnar cut and love the sound. Mark T sells some nice pipes with glasspacks and also can screw some straight pipes in them to make some real noise if you choose. Two brothers makes some 6X6 pipes and what have read not hp lost. Never have seen these pipes so only read about them. Myself if I was going to invest in pipes I would check out Mark's first. He has some sound bits on his web site. JMO David

I have a 97 tourer with 2 brothers 3 into 1 aluminum canisters on it, i bought the bike used with htem on it. Bike sounds like a prosche engine with them, they significantly reduce stock ehaust weight and I was told the fastest valks have 2 bros racing exhaust on them. Not having the bike new or ridden one with stock I cant compare performance, all I knwo is the bike runs like a raped ape. The price of my exhaust is around $1200 which I think is outrageous and would not have paid for them. The header pipes do discolor to a brass/copper type color. 2 Brothers do NOT recommend rejetting the valk's carbs with their exhaust.
in my opinion cobra's are too loud and i wouldnt spend on exhaust and then rejetting six carbs.
Thats just my opinion. I'm in lafayette and will meet anyone wanting to hear the 2 bros racing exhaust on my fat lady,
97 tourer

Well here is what I know about .02 worth. 99 Standard, I started off with the stock pipes. Cut the piggies and drilled the baffels. A little more sound but it wasn't enough. So I contacted Mark T and bought a set of Glasspack design. I purchased the whole enchilada. About 900+ worth and then also got replacement Headers because mine had blued. Marks Pipes give you 3 different sounds. As he says from Mild to Wild. So all said and done it was $1200.00 smackers. I have since heard many different pipes for the Valk. My buddy has the Cobra 6 x 6 and when he removes the baffels the ground almost shakes. VERY LOUD. Baffels in and they are still loud but not as bad. I think the only thing that would be louder then the Cobra's would be to just run headers only. Now for the TBR's Two Brothers Racing. I have another friend with them on his bike. the 6 x 2 canisters. He really likes them. TBR also claims you will gain horse power without re jetting the carbs. Now I just bought another Valk and it has the TBR 6 x 6 drag pipes on it. Louder then the TBR 6 x 2 but not as bad as the cobras. You will also loose HP with the Cobras. My buddy has dynoed it out and the best he could do was very low 90s with the baffels out. About 86 with them in. Your results may vary from here, but my experience was this. I dynoed my bike with the stock pipes and was at 94 HP I dynoed the bike after the Glasspacks and was @ 92HP. So my friend with the TBR 6 x 2's had an extra set that he was going to sell and I asked him to ship them to me so I could mount them and go do a dyno run. So he shipped them and I mounted them and off to the same Dyno that I always go to. TBR 6 x 2 Canisters bumped it up to 97HP. But it leaned me out pretty good through Mid Range. So I went and ordered a new Set of Viking Pipes. These are 6 x 2 design and I have been told they will add HP. So another 1000.00 smackers and 4-5 week lead time. So those should show up around X-Mass. So my friend still has a set of TBR 6 x 2 Canisters for sale if you are interested. Im sure he would make you a good deal on them. They only have maybe 3K miles on them. The headers on TBR pipes will turn a Gold color but not blue. They also have a cross over pipe which I think does add HP. So this new Valk I bought was bought for the Blower, which is now being moved over to my bike. And when the Viking pipes come in they will go on my bike. So my friend is going to buy the other bike with the Glass Packs on it. But he may switch over to the TBR 6 x 6 when the Viking pipes show up.. So I may have a set of Mark T Glass packs with all the goodies and maybe a set of Cobra 6 x 6 for sale too. Remember your results may vary, we are @ 5,300' in elevation so that might have something to do with the results. Good luck to you and let me know if you are intrested in any of the pipes mentioned above. Pops

I have found sound is very fatiguing. If one planes on touring a 500 mile day will be hard. But if one only goes on short rides and his neighbors are 100 yards down the road help ones self.

I was looking a long time for changing the pipe of my interstate. I wanted the cobra pipe. It was too expensive and many people told me that i have to make some change in the carb and the valve (another $$$$$$) So i didn't buy them. This summer i had to ride behind a friend in Philadelphia and he had this cobra pipe. I could't listen nothing just the sound of the valk in front of me and it was like love and hate relationship...... terrible.:explode:......beautyfull !!!:D Living up there in Canada , we have to lived with different rule for the noise of our bike and i assure you that the cobra pipe are a pipeline of ticket around Montréal ! But i want to change the sound of my bike!!!! I didn't want the goldwing sound (nothing!!!) and i don't want any trouble with my friend...............the policemen. Honda have something for the Tourer. It's a cover for the tip of your muffler who look like you have 6 into 6 pipe. You just have to cut 3 inch on the end of your muffler if you want to fit your interstate. The sound is good!!! but not to noisy. Pierre :flamer:

I have supertrapps 6/2. the sound is great in my opinion, you can change it by adding ,or removing disks, and the seat o the pants dyno says more power & better mileage for sure. about $800. they will blue the hedders but I've not been able to lean her out enough to have it happen yet. just now turning a nice golden color. still a work in progress. paduka1

I purchased my cobra 6 into 6 pipes and Cobra jet kit when my Valk had a little over 1000 miles on it, I did the install myself. Now my Valk has 35,000 miles on it and there is only a very little blue near the heads, about an inch or two. They are worth every penny I paid for them, the bike sounds like a modified racecar. However I recommended the same set-up to a friend. I did the installation exactly like mine and his pipes blued terribly after only 2000 miles. His are blue all the way to his foot pegs. I have no Idea why.
Good Luck!

The degree of blueing (heat) produced is partially, if not primarily, due to the fuel mixture you are getting (lean / rich) Leaner = hotter, thus more blueing.

I've been told that many of the people who have blueing problems have forgotten their choke on at one time or another. Not sure if there is much truth to it or not. I still have the stock exhaust; unmodified, & no blueing noticeable at all. But I try to always check my choke when I start to ride.
