Author Topic: "whoosh-whoosh" rotational noise from back  (Read 1362 times)

Just noticed a noise at low speed that sounds much like a dragging brake...but....braking doesn't change it, and it's present only when clutch is engaged. When I pull in the clutch, it's gone. Changing gears makes no difference....any ideas....U-joint? bearing? This 97 has 9400 miles....is like new....told dealer to grease splines when tire changed recently.....

Any help appreciated!!

Shouldn't be a driveline problem with the mileage that you have. Might be a rear wheel bearing, but I would only guess that since the year of your bike and the low mileage. I'm guessing that it has done a bit of sitting.
Rear bearings usually tend to go at 40K to 60K.

When the rear wheel is removed, the proper procedure and/or torques are not used in reassembly. If this is the case, the rear brake caliper will scrape on the disk. You might want to check that-happened to me.shocked

I took the bike into the dealer yesterday after I noticed a strange noise coming from the drive area when I rocked the bike in gear.

When I moved the bike forward a foot or so, and rocked it, the noise disappeared.

I believe it's either a bad bearing or u-joint. Hope it's not more than that-I have changed axle oil 3 times, and there was no evidence of more than normal wear.

Waiting for news......

Dealer reports that the rear wheel bearings were bad...tight, but bad spot....whew!

Lucked out-tight wheel bearings....$!58 later, it's like new again!

Thinking strongly about keeping this bike for awhile...was entertaining several offers after I bought the GL1800....

Is your bike still under the factory or extended warranty? If so the wheel bearings should be covered.

Nope, out of warranty.

Dealer here told me that Honda did not cover wheel bearings-wear item. Just had two replaced on front of my GL1800....

...under warranty. I had about 65,000 on it, but it was still under the extended one I bought.Cheesy

That was one of the primary reasons that I opted for the extended warranty. I had my rear bearings replaced at about 47,000 on my 1st Interstate. That was when it was less than a year old.
