Membership List On Board To Contact Others

I wanted to officially ask this question before moving further on it.

Several members would like to have a list on the board which has all the members listed with an email addy, city and state  so that they can contact others in their area to go on rides, form local chapters of the VOAI  and have local ride-ins.

I know alot of people want this so what I am asking is for your input,  do you want this or do you not want this?

I know some people get funny about having their name out there but being in the club I would think people would want to meet up with others and do as much riding and making new friends as possible.

So let me know your feelings on this before we move forward on publishing a listing.  We have riding season starting for alot of people and they want to meet you and RIDE.

Well, we had a listing of the members info on the old board, and it worked pretty well. I would imagine that as long as you can opt out, and not get published on it, most members should be OK with it.

I sounds like a great idea. Would have no problem if you listed e-mail address, location and maybe just first name. Folks could see just how many other Valkers are near them, and maybe hook-up for rides. I'll be watching for the list.:up:

Don't know if we can do it with this board set up or not, but on the old board if you remember you needed member number & password. Now if it can be set up somewhat similar where the spammers can't easily get the info. Like I said in the post in "Board Makeover" I think it would be great if the general membership had a way to find/contact other members in their area.

I think the current member list allows individuals to include as much or as little information as each person is comfortable with.  

If I'm no mistaken, the key additional feature would be to allow the list to be sorted by City/State to allow individuals to locate others in their general area.

Is there some way we can keep the spammers out? I am fine with a password system. I would really like to be have an easy way to get a hold of members in my area, but just putting everyone's email out there for anyone to see sounds like we are asking for trouble IMHO.

Just some info on the Members board you see here on the forums.  These people are not all active current members of the VOAI.  Some are registered on the forum but not actual club members, with that there are alot of members listed that are not active or current.  On that board as well there is no way to list them with name and city and state at all.  

I would have to see if we can get a members board that would be password protected as much as possible, but with any thing there is no guarentee.  I understand that no one wants spammers getting to them, with anything there is always that risk but we will see what we can do to protect everyone as much as possible with a id-password access to datebase for members.  Let me check more on that.

I agree that I'd be happy to have other members in the area contact me and vice versa. Making the membership list searchable/available only to logged in, registered members is a good idea.

I might even suggest taking the security aspect of it one step further to prevent spam:

- Make the list available only to those members that have been registered for more than a month, and only to those members that have posted a few (perhaps 10) times. If someone was just after the members list, that'd probably put a damper on them, and give the admin a chance to identify them as a nutjob in advance.

- Instead of actually making an e-mail address available, have a web based form that a user writes in, so that they never actually see the address that they just sent a message to.
--or--
- Limit a user to looking up/obtaining only a certain number of e-mail addresses within a set time period

The trick is to make this functional for honest people and a hassle for people trying to sell stuff to all of us.

I thought the present format dont allow us to know each others email addresses but allows us to send emails and private messages. Am I missin something?

THE local riders maybe can be provided by the membership volunteer to those wanting names, he can then check you out first so he knows your not a spammer and then supply you with state members. what do ya think of that?

I'm not too worried about spammers, I can junk spam and then block it. So go ahead and post me.
