On Sunday, I went through the downtown area of Novato, CA, (where I live) on my way to my best friend and fellow Valker's house for a nice little putt in the country.
When I stopped for gas, there was a chick with a Dyna Glide getting gas at the same island as me. She wouldn't even acknowledge my presence. I said to myself, "When I see you on the side of the road, I ain't gonna stop...". But I would have...
5 minutes later, I found out what the attitude was about. When I turned onto the main drag, there were 150-200 HD's lined up on both sides of the street. I counted at least ten (10) CHP motorcycle units at intersections as well as eight (8) squads. Why do they always need to be escorted around...? As I passed by, it was as if they would turn away, one by one, so as not to see me. Not a nod among them... I just shook my head.
When I got to my bro's place, I told him what was going on. We both laughed, and said we were glad to be riding out of town.
Five more minutes and we're on our way. As we head down the road, we see 8-10 HD's on the side of the road. Everybody's off and standing around one guy's bike. Someone's holding a seat... One guy's pissed off (must have been his bike...) But no one looks up as we ride by... I guess we didn't make the right kind of noise.
Funny, all I heard when we passed by them was two fat ladies droning at the exact same pitch, and the lonesome sound of a dead Harley.

About the attitude...me'n Sweet Tooth stopped at a relatively new bar 'n' grill with the cage on our way back from Dennis Kirk's catalog store Sunday. Place is called "Fat Boys" and was it ever full of folks who appear to do ALL their shopping at the boutique. Saw more people outfitted head to toe in brand new looking stuff advertising "the motor co." and trying to look bad. Not to mention what Sweet Tooth dubbed "show off row"; the burn out strip alongside of the building, right behind a row of parked cages. Kept expecting someone to start backing out just in time to nail somebody. Anyways, I thought it was a LOT funnier the Sunday before last. Sweet Tooth had to work, so I rode the Valk to church and was hanging all my Joe Rocket Phoenix stuff on a hanger in the coatroom when an older gentleman came in, looked at me and said, "You must be expecting rain" I expained that my raingear was in the saddlebags and that I've always worn full protective gear since the last time I found myself sliding down the road at 45 mph 20 some years ago. He asked what kind of bike I rode and I gave my stock reply, "A Honda Valkyrie, it's sort of like a Goldwing without all the plastic." He said, Oh, I know what that is, I ride a Goldwing and then I've got a little Harley to putt around town on."

As you all have seen my articles before and know that I just HATE the Harley Attitude. It just amazes me how 99 percent of them have the colors, the du rag and tatoos all over their arms and they TRULY think the colors and tatoos make them tougher than the average guy.......I've told several over the past couple yrs that smarted off about my bike to not let those tatoos and colors get their ass kicked.......you confront 90 percent of them and they will back off.....the other 10 percent you just have to kick their ass....ha

Dennis ~
As of yet, I don't believe I know Duane Collins, but ya never know... He could be one of those folks I see around town and say "Hey" to without knowing their names...
I ride a Red/Black Tourer with or without a passenger seat setup (depends on if The Boss is on the back), and my best friend rides a Silver/Black Tourer. His old lady NEVER goes out riding. She just complains about how long HE does...
Tell him to flag us down if he sees us and say howdy.

I have noticed the Harley attitude myself over the years. Whats up with that anyway? ? I stopped at the local HD store a few weeks ago just to look around. Man, everything in there is at least double the price anywhere else. $70 to $150 bucks for a pair of gloves with the HD logo. My deerskins cost $15. All the clothing, everything is priced like that. amazing. And the bikes, for the most part are way over priced and level of workmanship is just not there. Not to mention %90 of all HD's are still air cooled. 2 cents worth on that subject. And man, those guys will fight over their views of HD. Oh....I'm just picking on the HD guys......ha.....I think Harley Davidson has had problems in the past but manoman I think they are building a great bike again......I ride with several Harley's a lot and they do just fine......I've just picked on the HD guys for 40 yrs now and old habits are hard to break....ha......the bike is great....but I still HATE the Harley Attitude.....Iffin I could get past that I might would consider a Harley.....I could change my riding habits enough to accomodate a Harley....but don't think I could ever change my personality enough to get "THE ATTITUDE" necessary to own a Harley... ...besides....I'm not a Tatoo man.

Digger,
I have one of each. A Valkyrie and a Harley Ultra Classic. Both are great bikes. Just one is slower than the other.
You guys don't knock the Harley's until you try them. They are great bikes. Besides, this is America where you can own one of each.
BTW, I will be riding my Valkyrie to Montrose whearing my Harley half helmet. Do ya think that is legal in Colorado?

Harold no helmet law in Colorado. Only law you will break is wearing HD gear while riding the Valk!!!!!! Enjoy Montrose, wish I could be there. Am doing Sturgis instead. John

It's the only half helmet I have. Maybe I can put black electrical tape over where it says Harley and know one will know.
