Man.....trying to find a used interstate gas tank for a standard is really tough.....I guess everyone wants one.....even on ebay people are bidding high dollar for dented interstate tanks. I even had a salvage company in Houston here where I live claimed they had one for $400. I went over there and it was trashed out and not even an interstate tank.....it was just a standard.

I have heard of several folks and seen a few tanks who had a local welder fix their tanks. One guy I saw had a welder (a shop familiar with fuel tanks!) cut out both sides of his tank and weld a piece of metal into each side and add the original outside edges back to the tank (sorry-hard to explain without using my hands!). This put a 'wedge' in both sides which were about 2" wide near the seat to about 4" wide at the front. The tank looked stock from any angle except right above it where it was noticeably wider. I think it held nearly 9 gallons. His welder was from a shop in the southern USA named "Hanks Tanks". I think he paid $300 for all including repainting it.

Go to http://www.scootertrailer.net, look at the auxiliary tanks and for under $200 bucks you can add 3 gallons and carry it on your luggage rack. Looks good, works perfect.

na !
belly tanks mean no bike jack, and i certainly don't want 3 gallons of gas behind me for some moron in a lexus to run into while talking on a cell phone, reading the newspaper, shaving, brushing his teeth, and working on the computer while driving 40 mph over the speed limit in a school zone.
you can get an easy 150 miles out of a tank, i'm usually ready to stop and get a soda, pee, and talk to folks by then anyway.

You can us a jack under it just fine. If you have a lift adapter it would be usable if the vertical legs are removed. I personally don't use one. The jack can lift directly against the front edge of the tank and against the engine case. You may want to put a 1x2 piece of wood under the engine to make everything lift even.

Have you considered where the current tank is mounted? Between your legs on top of a hot engine, nothing protecting it. Plus not real strong metal?

I think on the VRCC someone reported that you can still get new IS tanks for around $700 or so. If you then sold your standard tank for $300 or so, you'd only be in it for $400 or less...about the money you'd have invested in the belly tank setup. Although you would still be about 2 gallons short. Just a thought.

It also pays to look at the tanks on EBay that aren't listed specifically as Interstate or Standard/Tourer. Mine was just listed as being for a Valkyrie and had a "suspicious shape" in the side and top views provided, so I contacted the seller asking if it had a big hole with bolts around it on the bottom. Yup. I told him it'd sell for more if he added to the listing to say it was for an Interstate, but he didn't bother...

Here's the link for the Belly Tank. It mounts just in front of the rear wheel underneath in the chassis. Looks awesome. Think I'll be getting one for my Valk Std so I don't fill up so much. http://www.rmworksinc.com/index.html
