after a couple bazillion miles i have never heard it to be a problem.

i guess you could grease the outside to make the rocks spip off faster, or stop riding in the rocks .

choose your favorite beer, empty can the old fashioned way by drinkin it cut it to size and just smoochie the can on there,

and then of course there is a chrome oil filter cover I won at the Philly ride in, which I havent had on the bike in  over a year cause I am too lazy to actually tighten an allen screw.

I have a mud flap on my front fender of my 01 nterstate.  It is there to keep nails from being stood up and run over by my rear tire but also pretty much protects the filter also.  You can see it hanging down in the pic below

Praise the lord never had a rear flat just front tire.

Never heard of a filter being cracked by a rock yet, have you?

The yellow hankerchief was given to all the bikers who participated in the first ground zero ride to the world trade center.

After I wrecked my first interstate I put it on my new one

My friend took this shot from his road king while we were riding home thru the bronx during the ground zero ride a few years ago

Zorba,
If you are concerned about the filter getting punctured by a stone or something, Rivco Products makes a chrome oil filter cover for $29. It fastens over the filter with a set screw and easily removes for filter changes.

I did a lot of reading about oil filter covers when I got my bike. The one sentence I remember reading was "To date, no one has reported an oil filter failure due to punture".

That stuck with me.

This motor has been around since 1988 on Goldwings.  So how many miles is that?
Has to be in the millions.

I just want to know why so many bugs find it unavoidable.

Thanks for the reply's guys !
I did see a Valk Sunday with a nice looking, chrome filter cover, couldn't find the owner !
Hey since my Bike is Red&White maybe I'll just put a "Coke Can" over it, that might be too cool though !

Well, don't know if there has ever been a problem; I've never heard of any. I have a chrome filter cover that I used for a while, but instead of putting it on, lately, I have just been putting on a chrome filter.
I put on 73K on my '99 I/S, and now have 81K on the '00 I/S I am riding, and I have never had or heard of anyone having an oil leak from a hit to the oil filter.
I guess that you could carry a spare filter with you, if you're worried that much about it.

KC,

I don't think a spare filter would help. Once the oil leaks out, it is too late to replace it without replacing the engine. LOL!

I too have never heard of a rock putting a hole in an oil filter. Most quality filter are made of pretty heavy steel anyhow.
