Now I understand how people can drive on a flat tire and not even know it. Perhaps some pre-ride bar activity was involved or a home lobotomy?

Well, the guy who posted the story on Biker News Online apparently didn't read the entire article as posted on the lifeisaroad link.  The rider wrote that he was riding along and the "all hell broke loose".  He further writes, "There is a big jolt, the bike starts to fishtail violently and the front end goes from lock to lock about 3 times. Somehow I get control of the bike..."  The point was he never saw the deer and didn't know what he hit.  But it is pretty apparent to me that he knew he hit something.

When I hit a deer 2 summers ago, I never saw the deer until the moment of impact either.  Things like this happen FAST.  Lucky for me, it was a small fawn and I didn't crash.  But it still did about $5000 worth of damage, even though I was able to ride the bike the rest of the way home about 200 miles.

Yes I was thinking the same - I see this is Dan Meyer's site (Life is a Road) Quite a contrast in descriptions.
A freind of mine who owned Excelsior Henderson hit a deer (in town) with EH #001 (the deer slayer) and said the same thing - never saw it, In fact he hit four deer - hit's one with every car he owns. I told him to stop buying cars.

Children don't jump out of a 8 ft ditch 15 feet into the air at 40mph. If you were a seasoned rider you would know that. As tragic as it would be to hit a child in or on any type of motor vehicle you can't base a persons entire future on a single moment. I can't imagine the grief it would cause me to hit a child especially having 9 children of my own. I have had two of mine hit by cars. In both cases they ran out in front of the car but were not hurt very bad. In both cases I placed no blame on the drivers because they were not speeding through my neighborhood and I myself have come close to hitting a child before. It;s a much diffeant thing to be out in the middle of the counrty and hit a deer and hitting a child. No Child or human can move as fast as a deer on the run. Why you would compare the two I have no idea. You don't drag a deer or any other creture down the road out of malice especially on a motorcycle. Maybe once you are actually old enough to get a drivers licence and put down a few miles you will better understand the concept.

Why is it when a person is walking or riding a bicycle near the side of the road motorists will veer off the the other side giving the pedestrian 12 feet of room yet that same person on a motorcycle and they give him 12 inches?

I would conclude people and bicycles are much quicker than motorcycles and more unpredictable like deer and cheetah's. Or they just hate motorcycles.

my recollection is the same as BobE and the reason it stuck with me is that I LOVE the reverse red and black that was only made in 01.  iF I ever need a paint job it would be those colors (well maybe a deeper corvette red like cycho has on his standard/tourer special)

The fellow was lucky to get out of the encounter alive.

Hope if it happens to any of us we are at least as fortunate
