 Chrome Water Pump Cover

Update 12-19-2000

The chrome water pump cover from Rattlebars is simply stunning.  Installation is messy, but the instructions are good.  It along with the lower hose kit for the Interstate, and a chrome oil filter cover, make a real difference in the look of the bike.

 This is the before

1.  Remove the bolt under the pump housing to drain, make sure you have a container that holds at least a gallon.  Dispose of the old fluid properly, animals and even kids will drink it (it tastes sweet), and it will kill them.

2.  Loosen the lower hose connection, complete the draining of fluid.

3.  Remove the four bolts (note position, they are not the same) holding the cover on, slip off the cover, take care to keep the O-ring clean and intact.  Notice how muck better the new cover looks next to the old one.

4.  This is the O-ring, rewet it with antifreeze before reassembling, also coat the grove in the water pump with antifreeze.

5.  Place the O-ring in the groove on the water pump, and carefully place in position, thread bolts in making sure not to move the O-ring.

6.  Carefully finger tighten before releasing the cover, or the O-ring will move, and you'll not be riding while Honda special orders the replacement.

7.  Tighten the bolts carefully.  The instructions and Honda manual state 9 ft lbs, two bolts snapped using a good torque wrench set to 9 ft lbs.  Be very careful.  If you snap the filler bolt, or short bolts, remove the cover, and use a screw extractor to remove, Pep Boys has replacements.  If you snap a long bolt.  You have to remove the water pump, after draining the oil, to extract the bolt (then refill the oil).

8.  Reattach the Lower hose, here you see it with the lower radiator kit.

9.  Refill the engine with radiator fluid.  This is a good time to replace your fluid, if you do, don't forget to replace the fluid in the reservoir).

The After - Looks much cleaner!

Follow the instructions to cover the right & left choke linkage.

Follow the instructions to cover the radiator overflow hose.  Get a Radiator cap cover, and the lady looks great!
