I NEED HELP.  I NEED TO REMOVE THE ALTERNATOR ON MY 1999 INTERSTATE.  I HAVE READ THE SHOP MANUAL AND "RATDOGS"  INSTRUCTIONS, BUT THESE ARE FOR THE STANDARD AND TOURER MODELS.  THERE MUST BE SOMETHING DIFFERENT ABOUT THE INTERSTATE.

FIRST, THERE IS NO ROOM/ACCESS TO DISCONNECT ANY WIRING PRIOR TO REMOVAL.  I HAVE TRIED TO SLIDE THE ALTERNATOR REARWARD FOR REMOVAL, BUT CANNOT GET IT BACK FAR ENOUGH TO CLEAR THE FRONT PART OF THE ALTERNATOR FROM THE ENGINE CASE.  IF ANYONE HAS DONE THIS CHORE ON AN INTERSTATE BEFORE, I WOULD BE MOST APPRECIATIVE OF YOUR ADVICE.

THANKS, DOUG

Maybe Griz can help you.  He had to change his interstate alt just before the Reunion in SD this year.  Search the board.  May go under Grizhead.  Probably May posts were made.

Same with the Tourer. I had to remove the center panel before I could remove the wires. It was very close after that, but when I hit just the right angle, it slipped out. Until I hit that angle, I thought there was no way it would come out.

I believe that the frames are the same for all three models.  I don't believe that the larger Interstate tank would pose a problem.

Removing the center panel should provide additional access (a few extra steps, but with large meat hooks, any extra room is great).

Just be patient and think of your Rubic's Cube.   rolleyes rolleyes rolleyes
