Clymer manual refers to brake pads needing replacement when no grooves can be seen. I just pulled mine, they are EBC
with two pads on each backing plate and no grooves visible. However there is 1/8" of pad material still left,  so I was wondering what the original pad thickness was in the first place?

are you also using the ebc rotors ??

I found that the ebc pads on my honda rotors made a terrible cricket like noise that made me nuts.   I use only honda pads now. Do your brakes make noise when you apply the brake?

The honda pads are pretty darn thick and if you dont see any groove left change em before you damage the rotors.   I dont know if its 1/4 inch or more thick when new  Maybe someone can measure the new ones.   You can always keep the old brakes in the saddlebag for emergency if you or a friend should need em

No, they were not making a noise, but the rear brake pedal seemed to have a lot of play and it seems that only the pedal height could be adjusted, so am presuming that the only way to resolve the problem is to change out the pads. Apart from that I'd rather pay for pads than a new rotor. When I got them all out it seemed that 1/8th" was quite a bit of pad left even though there were no wear grooves visible.

Paul,
I don't know the thickness when new, but here's a pic that may give you an idea.  These are Honda OEM pads.
