I am needing a front tire real soon. I have been looking at rear tires for the front, and have come up with several sizes. 140 80 17, or a 160 70 17.  both tires are  around 7.3 % shorter than stock. which would work the best?

I doubt they will be gone soon. That is one of the more popular tires for the rear of an HD.
I run 36-38 in that on the front depending on the load.

I checked several places, and that tire seems to be discontinued. good news is, I found one at a kawasaki dealer, shipped to my door for 50.00 it was their last one.
Dang, I wish they has several at that price...... I may check my local Kaw shop...

I placed a mark on my front tire, and on the slab, rolled th valk ahead until the mark on the tire went around one rotation, and measured the distance traveled. 80 " if anyone has a new motorcycle tire on the front,I would be curious what the measurement is. by the way, I also measured the rear 205 60 16 general altimax, and it measured 79" (I know, I need a hobby)
