I took the rear tire off this weekend to service the splines and decided to replace the car tire that had 21,500 miles on it.  I think I could have gotten another 20,000 out of it but decided to start out the season with a fresh tire.  There was absolutely no uneven wear on the tire and other than the tread being about half gone it still looked and rode great.  I stayed with the Goodyear Assurance Triple Tread, 205-60R-16.  I saved the old tire and will probably put it back on when this new one wears out.

Good report, Clint.  I take it all looked good with the splines?  Well oiled?

The splines looked fine.  I did not like the play in the wheel dampers so I have ordered a set from HDL and will replace thme before putting the wheel and tire back on.

I'm still considering putting the same tire on my bike this spring. I need to have the current E3 pulled and patched anyway (MP- the plug we put in last summer is now letting about 10 psi leak/week). I guess if I don't end up liking the CT I can always switch back to my E3.

Got my wheel dampers from HDL Friday and just getting ready to put the rear tire back on today.  Thought I would include some pictures of the old tire after 21,400 miles to show the wear and compare it to the new one.  It looks like the tread is a little over half gone from the old one, I'm pretty sure it would have gone to at least 35,000 miles before hitting the wear indicators.

boy Clint, after all those miles you put on last summer those tires still look great.  you have a good spare tire now.   how did the old dampers look that you replaced?  Did you by chance when you had the rear tire off check the weep holes in the pumpkin area so see if they were clear and lube that spline area up front?

Hey clint, check out this post I put in over on the vrcc tech board.  hoser

Here is a rear tire for the front in the correct size. It's a Shinko, should work well with a car tire. Hoser
712 REAR
STREET / CRUISER TIRE
The 712 Rear was designed for mileage and performance—without the high price tag. A staggered, positive ration tread pattern ignores highway rain and provides excellent wet weather adhesion. Other features include:

•H rated (130 mph)
•Tubeless, 4 ply nylon carcass
•Lateral grooves increase inline stability
•DOT approved
Size Retail Price

140/90-15 80.95
130/90-16 71.95
130/90-17 76.95
150/70-17 84.95 X
110/90-18 58.95

They looked OK by sight but they flopped around like a BB in a box.  The new ones took some pressure to get down in the compartments for them.  It is obviously going to be better.

I've got a set of the dampers on their way right now. I was getting all kinds of slop in the rear drive when letting off and getting back on the throttle. Hoping that's all I need...

I can't say that I noticed any slop in mine before pulling it down, but sure noticed the extra play after I took the wheel off and decided that they needed to be replaced before I took off this year.  I haven't had a chance to ride it yet but will let you know of any differences when I am able to get back out with it.  Hopefully that will be next week sometime.  My health insurance goes into effect this Sunday, and wouldn't you know that we are slated to get a couple of more inches of snow. Angry

What pressure did you end up running, Clint? I saw in the post right after you first put the tire on that you were running 32, but nothing after that.

I haven't ridden the bike yet since installing the tire.  The last one I started off at 40 lbs and did not like it at all.  Thought I had made a big mistake by adding the car tire.  Within a hundred miles I reduced it to 35 and it made a big difference.  After all adjustments I wound up in the 28 to 32 lb. range and could not really tell any difference.  I will start out with this tire at 32lbs. and decide from there.  When you rode it I had 28 lbs in it.

Great mileage on that tire and it looks only about half worn. I run 28psi on the GL1800 and on my last Valkyrie ran 26. I have about 22k on the Kumho that is on the wing and it looks similar to your tire. Most of the wing guys run 42-50psi and have issues with the corners wearing down to the cords in 7-8k.
I will say no more.

Unfrotunately, that second tire only lasted about 3600 miles.  Ouch. Evil
