What's the best way to remove the side covers on my Interstate to prevent breaking off the mounting tabs? I've removed the ones on my other I/S a few years ago and remember there's good way to remove them and not break the tabs. Just need that refresher so I can confidently remove these ones without the fear of breaking anything.

Thank you and sorry for such a basic question,

Mark

I put one hand at the back, and the other kind of under.  Then, pull the back side and bottom out, pivoting on the tab up front.  Once the bottom and back are out of the rubber mounts, open about 1/3 of the way, I look and carefully push the front, where the tab is, toward the seat, ie backwards, to release the tab, then pull straight out.

To put them on, carefully hook the front tab, with the cover at about a 1/3 angle.  Then, I line the top rear rubber mount up, and push in.  Both mine want to kind of have them pushed toward the back too.  Then, push the bottom in to seat the bottom rubber mount.  A little saliva on the rubber helps them slide in too.

I grease the grommets and the tabs on the sidecovers. They go on and off much easier.

When I replaced the spark plugs a couple years ago, I took the side covers off no problems.  Getting them back on was much harder just like everything else, you can take apart easier than reassembly.  Just be very careful and don't force anything even though, for me, it took a pretty hard tug to get them off since probably was never off before I thought I was going to break something.  Also, I would recommend to do it in the warmer summer months to help prevent breaking tabs in the cold.

I know Valkers slight amount of grease works very good on the grommets so less pressure is needed on or off with side panels.

On similar rubber grommets used on my Moto Guzzi I'll typically smear a little Vaseline Petroleum Jelly on surface and hole with a Q-Tip.

Thank You,
