dislike if strap on, moves around too much.  Very nice built into the seat, very expensive though.  Have you tried the 2000-2003 OEM seat yet?  It is much more comfy that the 98 OEM, and lot cheaper than a custom seat.  I have a Diamond Custom seat that switch to close to home, but I put my oem 2000-2003 seat when I travel, it is just as comfy, and I don''t have to cover it if I get in the rain, which I always do if out for long distance over several days, to keep the leather and velour custom seat form soaking up water and keeping my a$$ wet for the next couple days.   The vinyl oem don't soak it up.  I used the custom going to Michigan last year and it rained all day the first day out, clear across Iowa, west to east, and the north to south on the way back! Not gonna happen agaiin, I don't need no butt fungus!   Grin  laugh Hoser

I have a seat that I had rebuilt with an installed gel pad. It was just OK feeling, but the reason I took it off was if the sun was shining on it while parked, it stayed 100*+ for over an hour, and if it was cold outside, it was hard and like sitting on ice for an hour. The gel pad absorbed a lot of whatever temps were outside and hung onto those temps.

I have Ultimate seats on my Valk, came that way.   I got a ProPad for my seat.  I can sit on it for over 100 miles before the need to get off hits me.  I agree with Valker, about the pads absorbing heat/cold.  During hot weather, when I stop, I put my jacket over the seat to keep it from getting hot.  Cold weather, my butt keeps it warm.  I haven't had issues with the pad moving around that Hoser mentioned.

I had a local upholster put one of these in. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Large-Travelcade-motorcycle-seat-gel-pad-comfort-/380283183782?pt=Motorcycles_Parts_Accessories&hash=item588aa4e2a6 Took him an hour or so and cost me a total of $85 including the pad. He put a thin layer of foam padding over the gel pad so I don't feel the heat or coldness so far. Either that or my butt is less sensitive than Valkers!  Evil My wife says I have a candyass though.....

I'm not very heavy, and like to move to lean into a curve, requires some movement across the seat, the pad tends to slide with me. hoser

I use a sheepskin from Alaska Leather and it is a great addition. My seat has gel inserts under the OEM cover and, like Valker, it heated up like an oven in the sun. Terrible! But with the sheepskin over it, it's comfy for about 200 miles before I start to move around. I've done over 400 with this setup and made it through the day fine.

If you buy from alaskaleather.com, use the code "deadsheep" to get something like 10% off.

I would go with the newer seat, and then put the sheepskin on it, especially because of where you live.  The sheepskin will help a lot in keeping your rear cooler and drier.

Different riding styles, I tend to keep my butt in one spot on curves.  (I am over 6' 3" and 225 lbs)  Now if, I was on a snow sled, I use my whole body to turn.

I purchased a sheep skin covered strap on gel pack for my Shadow and really love it.  I had to keep tightening it until it finally got to where it doesn't come loose.  I ride these Appalachian Mountain roads a lot and have no problem leaning into the curves, even the Dragon.  Haven't noticed it being to hot or cold.  Maybe my buns have toughened up over the years.  My Val's seat is comfortable so I haven't needed the gel pad for it.  Longest ride was 670 miles in one day.
